The Three Temperature Scales
Temperature can be measured using three main scales: Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin. Each has its own history and use cases.
Celsius (°C)
The Celsius scale is used by most of the world. It's based on the freezing (0°C) and boiling (100°C) points of water at sea level.
Fahrenheit (°F)
Used primarily in the United States, the Fahrenheit scale sets water's freezing point at 32°F and boiling point at 212°F.
Kelvin (K)
The Kelvin scale is used in scientific contexts. It starts at absolute zero (-273.15°C), the coldest possible temperature.
Quick Conversion Formulas
Celsius to Fahrenheit
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
Fahrenheit to Celsius
°C = (°F - 32) × 5/9
Celsius to Kelvin
K = °C + 273.15
